Where am I? Being blasted by east coasterly breezes, in the largest city of the south island, the incredibly unfortuate earthquake ridden, Christchurch. Setting the scene a little..? "Under construction" is a good way to describe Christchurch's city center, as the massive earthquakes of 2011 and 2013 have destroyed the inner cities history, charm and vibe. But without sounding like its all doom and gloom, christchurch is rising from the rubble and the funky street art, quirky coffee shops, botanical gardens and huge billboards of the latest constructions show the prosperous future to come for the inner CBD. Cool things I've done... Unfortunately (I feel like I've said unfortunately so many times already) Christchurch seemed to be one of those 'gateway' places in a country where everything starts and ends, so after being in Christchurch 3 times and still not being able to say that I did anything cool is pretty depressing :( :( :( (lots of sad faces needed.) However a small mention to the botanical gardens is defiantly due, as I did have one lovely morning with a few fellow backpackers wandering around the massive gardens, through the trees and over cute little bridges taking lots of pictures and generally having a laugh in the rain... sometimes its the little things! Food I've tried ('it's cultural' excuse of getting fat) Not sure I should even try justify the amount of dominos I've ate at the moment... other than to say theres 5 choices of pizza and its $5 = 2 quids!!! Surely that shouldn't be legal.... Anything else of note.... Please don't be too disapointed at the lack of interesting stories I have to tell about Christchurch, but I would feel like I cheated if i skipped it out. However one amazing thing did happen in Christchurch.. we began our incredible week with the hire car and zoomed off into the distance, keep posted for the next write up about the 'road trip.....' |
