Cool things I've done... Besides trekking throughout the national park, hiking up to some beautiful view points, and “awwww”ing at baby seals playing in the rock pools, we had a great few days in this sweet hostel in Nelson, which was rather luxurious as far as backpacker hostels go! Equipt with volleyball net, ping pong (which I kicked ass at), a hot tub and sauna, free soup and fresh bread in the evenings, it was a small slice of paradise. Not my most finest moment however when I was encouraged to jump from the hot tub to the outdoor pool, which I was told was “cold”, but being northern I thought I could hack it for the 5 or so seconds I would be in the water! However I didn't count on some little “fu@#$r” pushing me in as I was mentally preparing myself, or that it was most probably artic like temperatures, and my muscles would give up whilst swimming to the side (which seemed a good few miles away at the time.) So attractively looking like a drowned rat I eventually made it out and sat in the sauna for a good hour until all the feeling in my limbs returned. Suppose I can laugh about how ridiculous I looked flapping around now… just thankfully nobody was clever enough to have their phone handy.. | Where am I? Welcomed in by the beautiful Marlborough sounds, in all its wondrous glory, I made it to the port of Picton in the south island of New Zealand! Setting the scene a little.. Starting with Picton, which is sweetly positioned on the tip of the south island, it’s at the forefront of all things that the south island is renowned for. Where the mountains begin, the forests shoot up and the national parks encompass human footprint. (Yes it really is as magical as it sounds.) From Picton we headed south westwards to the quaint town (well city in New Zealand terms) of Nelson. Which of course is surrounded by beautiful mountains (a new zealand standard) and next door to the most visited National park in New Zealand- The Abel Tasman National Park. The abel tasman curves beautifully around the coastline and is eagerly explored by hundreds of visitors each year (including myself) via the water taxi.
